I'm trying to watch more foreign movies, since my Net-flix account has indicated that I've already seen all of the American movies. The only problem with foreign films is that I can't help but feel that I'm the butt of the joke. That the dialogue is poorly translated just to purposefully cut me out of inside jokes between the peoples of other culture. I just watched this Italian flick called "Bread and Tulips" that is supposed to be an award winning comedy. I enjoyed the movie, but I didn't know it was a comedy until after I watched it and read some reviews. This leads me to believe that either the movie was poorly translated- on purpose- so that I would feel dumb or- and this is the more desirable option- that other cultures simply have terrible senses of humor. I'm trying to be open minded about other countries having decent senses of humor, though, so I'm more inclined to think that I'm correct in my assumption that movies are translated sloppily just so that I will feel insecure. Is it too much to ask for a little respect?

I've seen a couple of really good French movies lately but I'm not sure that they are available on DVD yet. You may be interested in: TELL NO ONE and I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED YOU. Kristin Scott Thomas stars and she deserves the Oscar for best actress, I think. The second one is, so far, one of my favorite movies of the year. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is my other favorite movie.

Another foriegn movie which I know is available is THE LIVES OF OTHERS. It won the Oscar for the Best Foreign Film either last year or the year before that. That movie blew me away. I only saw it once (and bought the DVD later but still haven't watched it. I much rather watch movies at the cinema than at home.) and it's still with me.

Crap...I knew I should have checked IMDB before I posted my first reply. The movie I so loved (and yet couldn't get the name straight) is I'VE LOVED YOU SO LONG not I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED YOU. Sorry. Still, check it out. It's brilliant. I won't get into why because I don't want to spoil it.

I will check them out, thanks! I also really want to see "Slumdog Millionaire." All I know about "Slumdog" is what I've heard from eavesdropping in on other people's conversations, but it sounds kind of fascinating.
